Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team is hosting the Wayne Proffitt Classic beginning Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The Hornets welcome Randolph College (Lynchburg, Va.), Marymount University (Arlington, Va.), and Centre College (Danville, Ky.) for the first Wayne Proffitt Classic since 2019.Â
The games will be played in Turner Gymnasium on Wayne Proffitt Court located on the campus of University of Lynchburg. Admission is free for all four contests.Â
The court and tournament are named for Lynchburg basketball legend Wayne Proffitt, the program's leading scorer with 1,842 points. Proffitt played from 1964-67 averaging 32.3 points per game. He also coached Lynchburg for 16 seasons and accumulated 249 victories. Proffitt won the Dixie Conference championship three times as a player and won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship as the coach in 1979. It was Lynchburg's only ODAC crown until head coach
Hilliary Scott led the Hornets to the top of the league in 2016.Â
Proffitt is one of two Lynchburg players to score 50 points or more in a game. He scored 50 on eight occasions including a program-record 68 in 1966 against UNC Charlotte. Lynchburg's only other 50-point scorer, Tharon Suggs, scored 50 during the Wayne Proffitt Classic against Pfeiffer in 2019.Â
