Women's basketball sets program record with 104 points

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team scored a program-record 104 points in a blowout win over Wilson College Friday afternoon, cracking the century mark for the fourth time in team history.

Lynchburg's previous record was 103 points against Hollins during the 2008-09 season.

The Hornets also made a program-record 16 shots from the 3-point line and shot 50% (16-32) from deep. The Hornets reset their 3-point record from a season ago when they converted 15 shots from downtown against Guilford on Jan. 4 2023.

Sammi Sever led the offensive attack with 16 points, tying her season-high. She only missed one shot from the floor on eight attempts, made her only 3-point attempt of the day, and went 1-2 at the foul line. Five other Hornets scored in double-figures, but none more notable than Ashley Vandergrift's 15 in her return to play.

The sophomore missed the first 10 games of the year but seldom missed from downtown in her first game of the season. She shot 5-7 (71.4%) from 3 for a career-high 15 points. Vandergrift punctuated a high-scoring first half with a shot from the half-court logo on a play that started with 5.5 seconds left. Her buzzer-beater put Lynchburg up 52-22 at the half.

Nine points from Vandergrift and nine from Sayre Brandstatter helped get Lynchburg to its 30-point lead at the break.

Brandstatter ended the day with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. She was one of eight Hornets with multiple assists. Kayla Terry led the way with five, and Lynchburg's 29 assists were tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. The Hornets also dished out 29 helpers in 1980, and their record is 32 from a game against William Peace in 2013.

Lettie Michael got Lynchburg to the 100-point mark with a 3-pointer assisted by Vandergrift. Allyson Booth made the next two historic layups to give Lynchburg its program record and a 104-46 victory over the Phoenix.

The Hornets (5-6) take on North Carolina Wesleyan (3-5) on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
