St. Petersburg, Fla. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team defeated Mt. St. Mary College 103-53 Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets hit the century mark for the second time this season. Piercen Young shot an efficient 5-7 (71%) from the field and 4-6 (67%) from behind the arc to finish with 14 points. Jonathan Foust added 13 points. Cameron O'Conner finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, one rebound shy of a double-double. 15 Hornets shot at least 50% from the field on the day.Â
The Hornets held a steady lead throughout the first half. In the final 4:15 of the period, Lynchburg went on a 14-3 run led by the scoring efforts of Young and Jayson Easton. The Hornets went into the half with a commanding 45-23 lead.Â
A 3-pointer from Young at the 16:52 mark sparked a 16-0 run from the Hornets, which included a Jake Hart lob to Deondre Ross. Foust scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. Trey Gillenwater caught fire after scoring his first basket of the game off a layup with 6:11 left to play. Gillenwater led the team in scoring with 16 points off 6-9 (67%) shooting from the field and 4-5 (80%) from deep. A layup by Elijah Davis with 1:04 remaining in the game gave the Hornets a 53-point lead over the Knights, their largest of the game.
The Hornets displayed a dominant effort on the boards, out-rebounding the Knights 64-21. The Hornets shot 40-79 (51%) from the field, 14-34 (41%) from deep, and recorded 21 assists.
The Hornets (8-5, 3-1 ODAC) will begin the new year by traveling to play Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m.Â
