32-point fourth quarter lifts women's basketball past Ferrum

Ferrum, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team defeated Ferrum 66-53 Wednesday night.

The Hornets, backed by 15 from Sayre Brandstatter and 14 from Brooke Cason, avenged their playoff loss to the Panthers from last season and won their first conference game of the year.

After the Panthers scored the first bucket of the game, the Hornets went on a 13-2 run spanning most of the first quarter. With 26 seconds left in the opener, five Hornets had registered a point.

Brandstatter was the leading contributor in the second quarter with six points. She put the Hornets up 10 with a steal and layup at the end of the first half. In addition to leading the team in scoring, she ended the night with nine rebounds, three steals, and three assists.

Ferrum opened the second half on a 10-2 run and held a four-point lead after 45 minutes. Cason was the hero of Lynchburg's fourth-quarter comeback nailing three triples and making a layup. Lynchburg scored 32 points in the final quarter, its most in a single quarter all season. Olivia Harris added a 3 to Lynchburg's tally as the Hornets shot 4-6 (66.7%) from downtown and 8-12 (66.7%) from the floor in the final period.

The Hornets (4-4, 1-3 ODAC) host Guilford (4-1, 1-1 ODAC) on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.
