Box Score Demorest, Ga. -- Logan Webster homered, Ryan Long delivered a three-run double, and the 16th-ranked University of Lynchburg baseball team got back on the winning track Sunday with a 10-2 win over La Verne in the closing game of the Piedmont Early Spring Tournament.
Lynchburg jumped out ahead early with three runs in the top of the first, taking the lead without putting the baseball in play. Brandon Garcia led off the game with a walk, and a hit-by-pitch and another walk loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Jackson Harding drew a bases-loaded walk that opened the scoring. The Hornets added two more runs in the inning, one on Gavin Collins' sacrifice fly and the the third on a Josh Gjormand run-scoring double.
The Leopards trimmed the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fifth innings, but Lynchburg broke it open late. The Hornets drew a couple of walks and took advantage of a ULV error that made it 4-2 in the seventh, and Riley O'Donovan drew a bases-loaded walk before Long cleared the loaded bases with a pinch-hit double that broke the game open.
Webster slugged his first homer of the season in the eighth, a two-run shot to make it 10-2 in Lynchburg's favor.
Wesley Arrington pitched well in his season debut, going four innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Jack Bachmore earned the win in relief with 3 ⅔ innings of one-run ball; the lefty struck out four. Matt Cassidy and Travis Shumate turned in scoreless outings in the late going.
Avery Neaves drew three walks in the game, giving the senior eight through three games this season and 102 for his Lynchburg career. That number topped PJ Alvanos' career record for bases on balls in a Hornet uniform.
Lynchburg (2-1) will welcome Eastern to Fox Field next Saturday at 11 a.m. for a home-opening doubleheader.
