Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Four University of Lynchburg women's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday, but it wasn't quite enough for the Hornets as they dropped an 80-72 decision to visiting Roanoke.
Olivia Harris led the Hornets with 16 points, going 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point arc, while Maddie Nimmo (14 points), Macey Mullins (13), and Ashley Vandergrift (12) also topped the 10-point plateau. Mullins was also hot from 3, also going 4-for-8, while Nimmo dished out eight assists.
Lynchburg started with a strong first handful of minutes against its Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival, jumping out to a 14-9 lead after Nimmo hit a 3 and a pair of free throws. The Maroons, however, responded with a 10-0 run to lead by five at the quarter break.
The Hornets found a run of their own early in the second and played great defense to start the period, eventually tying the game at 25-25 after Brooke Cason made a couple free throws with 4:34 until the half. Lynchburg tied it again, 31-31, later in the period, but RC found another run at the quarter's end, scoring the last five points to head into the break with a 36-31 lead.
Roanoke turned that into a double-digit lead early in the third, starting the quarter on a 9-2 run, and the Hornets never climbed back within one possession down the stretch.
Rose Sande led the Maroons with 17 points, while Madison Nereu added 16 off the bench for the Maroons.
Lynchburg (7-15, 6-9 ODAC) will hit the road as it continues conference play Friday at 7 p.m. at Shenandoah.
