Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team took down No. 14 Christopher Newport Wednesday afternoon.
A nine-run 3rd inning powered the No. 11 Hornets over CNU 14-6. This marked their fifth-straight win and upheld their undefeated record at home.
Josh Gjormand made his second start on the mound for Lynchburg this season and earned his first-career win. The senior pitched 6.2 innings allowing one earned run and striking out four. Gjormand made his longest career outing and flexed his two-way ability. He held the 14th-ranked Captains at bay one day after reaching base twice and driving in two runs against Hampden-Sydney.
Seven different Hornets batted in runs in the 3rd inning. Brandon Garcia and Eric Hiett both had RBI singles and Riley O'Donovan drove in two on a single to left.
Carrson Atkins hit his fourth homer of the year in the 6th inning bringing home Jackson Harding. He followed this up with a two-RBI double in the 7th capping off his four-RBI day. Three of Atkins homers have come in the Hornets last six contests.
The freshmen Trever Barnes and Matt Cassidy closed out the game on the mound completing the 14-6 win.
Lynchburg (18-3, 7-1 ODAC) will take on Eastern Mennonite Saturday, April 1 in a double-header beginning at noon.
