Box Score 2 Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team coasted past Averett in both games of a double-header Saturday.
Zack Potts set a program record with his 25th-career pitching win in a 11-1 Game 1 victory, and the Hornets shut out the Cougars 12-0 in Game 2.
The Hornets scored eight runs in the first three innings of Game 1 setting up Potts for his historic milestone. The Oilville, Va. native went eight innings allowing one run on four hits. He also fanned seven batters on his way to career-victory No. 25.
Potts is 25-4 in 33-career starts for the Hornets. He went 7-0 in 2021 and won all-region honors from d3baseball.com and the ABCA that season. He took over the program lead in wins from Brandon Miller '15.
Potts is also tied with eight Hornet hurlers for second on the single-season wins list with nine. Teammates Brandon Pond and Nick Mattfield are featured in the eight-way tie.
Matt Gouker has held the record since 2005 when he won 11 games.
Nine Hornets recorded hits with Jackson Harding leading the way going 3-5. Gavin Collins drove in three runs on two hits.
Wesley Arrington modeled Potts' success on the mound in Game 2. He pitched seven frames with nine Ks and did not allow a run. He earned his fourth win on the season after Travis Shumate and Baylor Cumbea pitched the 8th and 9th innings to complete the shutout.
Benton Jones, Riley O'Donovan, and Harding led the way in the power department with doubles. Harding's hot day at the dish continued with two hits and three RBI. The graduate student's .372 batting average is second on the team behind Josh Gjormand.
Avery Neaves tallied his 35th RBI with a bases-loaded walk during a five-run 8th inning as the Hornets dominated the Cougars from wire to wire.
Lynchburg (26-4, 14-2 ODAC) hosts No. 10 Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
