Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team grinded out two wins over Guilford Saturday to earn the regular-season title in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The Hornets mounted a pair of comebacks over the Quakers in 9-7 and 7-4 wins.
Benton Jones went 4-4 with a homer, two doubles, and single in Game 1, and Josh Gjormand went 3-3 in Game 2 as Alex Gianascoli tallied his second save in Game 2.
The Hornets trailed 5-1 in Game 1 during the 6th inning. Eric Hiett drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the frame, and Jones brought Lynchburg within one run with his first double of the day.
Guilford pushed one more across in the 7th, but after the stretch, Lynchburg exploded for five runs beginning with a RBI single from Carrson Atkins.
Jones capped off the five-run 7th with his second RBI double of the game. He leads the team with six home runs and has 24 RBI on the year.
Jack Bachmore closed out the game over the last two innings for his eighth save of the year.
In Game 2, the Hornets mounted another comeback in the 6th. Down 4-1, the Hornets busted out four runs beginning with a three-run triple from Gavin Collins. Gjormand drove in the fourth run of the frame.
Collins and Gjormand both tallied two more RBI in the next inning and put the Hornets up 7-4.
That score held as Gianascoli fanned two over two scoreless frames to close out the game and secure Lynchburg's regular-season title. Wesley Arrington recorded his fifth win in the victory.
Lynchburg (33-5, 19-3 ODAC) concluded an undefeated season at home with its second-straight regular-season crown. The Hornets will be th etop seed in the ODAC tournament. Lynchburg begins its quest for a second ODAC trophy in three seasons on Saturday against Bridgewater.
