Rust lifts No. 10 men's lacrosse past Roanoke

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse junior Jake Rust scored a career-high six goals against Roanoke Saturday evening. 

The No. 10 Hornets improved upon their undefeated conference record with a 14-11 victory over the Maroons. 

Rust scored his first goal of game 8:50 into play. By that time, Lynchburg already built a four-goal lead thanks to scores from Riley Hastings, Finn Schmidt, and Grant Voigt

After Roanoke stopped the streak with a goal, Rust tallied his second of the game on an assist from Voigt late in the first quarter. 

Charlie Evans scored Lynchburg's first man-up goal of the evening and gave the Hornets their largest lead of the game 6-1. Both teams scored twice in the second with Lynchburg in the driver's seat 7-3 at halftime. 

Roanoke stormed back out of the break. The Maroons scored five goals in the third quarter tying the game 8-8. Rust slipped his third goal of the game in the middle of the Maroon comeback. 

Lynchburg used two man-up opportunities to retake the reigns. First, Riley Mitchell scored a man-up goal with 2:01 left in the third. Rust followed that up with his fourth goal of the game, also a man-up. The Hornets are 18-40 (45%) on the man advantage which is the third-best mark in the conference. 

Mitchell extended Lynchburg's lead to 11-8 with his third goal of the night joining Rust with a hat trick. 

Rust scored twice more in the fourth quarter to tally reach his career high in goals. Rust's season high before the six-goal performance was his four-goal day at Carbini on Feb. 18. Rust assumed the team's lead in goals. He has 25 scores, and Mitchell is in second with 22. Mitchell leads the team with 41 points. 

Chris Darminio tied his career-best caused turnover mark with four. Darminio now has five games with four caused turnovers in his career. His most-recent four-CT game was May 1, 2021 against Hampden-Sydney. Darminio has 86 caused turnovers in his Lynchburg career. The senior also scooped up six ground balls. 

Tyler Hadley made 13 saves, and Michael Kraus won 17 faceoffs. Kraus is the top-faceoff guy in the conference with 162 wins (56.3%), and Hadley has the best save percentage (58%). 

Lynchburg (9-4, 5-0 ODAC) takes on Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Va. on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
