Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team swept its Saturday double-header against Ferrum with the help from a complete-game shutout by Zack Potts.
Avery Neaves tallied four walks on the day putting him atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for career walks with 119. Neaves has led the ODAC in walks for the past two seasons drawing 38 in 2021 and 56 in 2022. The senior broke the record in just his third year of ODAC competition. Neaves is currently tied for the conference lead in walks this season at 25.
Game 1 was dominated start-to-finish by Zack Potts' lights-out performance on the mound. The senior pitched to his second-career complete-game shutout fanning 10 batters and only allowing five hits. It marks Lynchburg's first complete game since Kinston Carson went eight innings in a 2-0 loss on April 17, 2021. This outing was good for Potts' eighth win on the year, and he has yet to record a loss. The Oilville, Va. native is sporting a 1.99 ERA through 54.1 innings on the season with 53 strikeouts as well.
Carrson Atkins continued his hot streak at the plate with a two-RBI double in the 2nd inning, and the Hornets took down the Panthers 3-0.
In Game 2, the junior Gavin Collins started the scoring in the 4th with his second homer of the year. This two-run blast was followed by an RBI single from the freshman Brandon Garcia.
Ferrum battled back putting up three runs in the 5th and another on a solo shot in the 6th making the score 4-4.
In the bottom of the 6th, Brandon Garcia came in to score off of a sac fly from Riley O'Donovan.
Jack Bachmore pitched the final two innings of the contest without allowing a hit, and the Hornets won 5-4. Bachmore earned his sixth save of the season, and Travis Shumate was awarded his first win of the season.
Lynchburg (22-4, 11-2 ODAC) will continue conference play Tuesday, April 11 on the road at Va. Wesleyan.
