Box Score Richmond, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball senior Zack Potts pitched seven innings of shutout ball and earned the win against Randolph-Macon Thursday.
The all-conference second-teamer scattered three hits with seven strikeouts and tallied his 10th win of the season as the Hornets took down R-MC 3-0 in the first game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championship weekend.
In the double-elimination tournament, Lynchburg will take on No. 3 Shenandoah at 1 p.m. Friday in Richmond, Va. on the campus of University of Richmond.
Potts allowed his first hit in the 3rd inning and got into a jam after a sacrifice bunt and a hit-by-pitch. However, he induced a double play from Brandon Garcia and Benton Jones to escape the one-out situtuation. Lynchburg leads Division III in double plays with 45.
In the 8th, after Avery Neaves crushed a home run the opposite way for his seventh dinger of the season, Jack Bachmore took over on the mound.
Both players left indelible marks on the game as the conference announed all-ODAC teams during the game. Neaves garnered second-team honors, and Bachmore became Lynchburg's first ODAC pitcher of the year since Brandon Pond won the award in 2021.
With runners on first and second with one out, Ethan Ianuzzi flared a base hit to left for the Yellow Jackets. Neaves fooled the baserunner on second by putting his glove up as if he was going to catch ball forcing Grayson Bush to stay at third. Neaves' clever play set up Bachmore's Houdini act. The lefty stopped a hard-hit grounder right back at him with his bare hand ont he mound. He threw home for the first out, and Holden Fielder completed the exhange to Joe Gordon at first for the inning-ending double play.
The Hornets aquired an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on an error off the bat from Riley O'Donovan. Bachmore retired the Yellow Jackets in order to close the game out and earn his 10th save of the season.
Lynchburg tied its program record for regular-season wins with 36 for the third-straight season.
