No. 11 men's lacrosse falls in ODAC title game

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team's quest for a third-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship narrowly came to an end Saturday evening.

The 11th-ranked and top-seeded Hornets fell 12-11 against No. 9 Washington and Lee.

Tyler Hadley earned all-tournament team honors and made 12 saves. Henri Marindin and Cole Nestor joined Hadley on the tournament and collected 11 ground balls total as a duo.

After taking a lead on back-to-back goals from RJ Barnes and Jake Rust in the first quarter, the Generals answered with four-straight goals and took their largest lead of the half.

Riley Mitchell ended the run on an assist from Dylan Wolfe 47 seconds before halftime.

Lynchburg's momentum from Mitchell's score did not carry into the second. Washington and Lee scored the first two goals of the third quarter and built its largest lead of the game 8-4.

However, the Hornets kept up the fight and muscled their way back into the game. By the 6:51 mark in the fourth, Lynchburg tied the game up. After two goals from Rust, a man-up goal from Charlie Evans, and another score from Mitchell, Spencer Vandenberg punctuated the comeback. Streaking across the front of the net, he flipped a shot over his shoulder and beat W&L's goalie for the game-tying goal.

The Generals quickly put Vandenberg's highlight goal in the rear-view mirror retaking the lead 62 seconds later. They scored a pivotal insurance goal with 3:01 left.

Michael Kraus won his 19th faceoff of the game on the restart, and Dylan Wolfe scored to bring Lynchburg within one. The Hornets were unable to find another equalizer in the final 2:11 of play, and Washington and Lee won its 12th ODAC trophy.

The Hornets (13-6) await the announcement of the NCAA tournament field on Sunday, May 7 at 9 p.m. to see if their season will continue in the national championship field.
