Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg Field Hockey junior defender Riley Winefordner scored her first goal of the season and Kayla Brady made a season-best eight saves in a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Mary Washington Wednesday night.
The win gave Lynchburg its third straight in the 30th all-time meeting of the series and the 24th-ranked Hornets picked up their first home victory of the season.
Offense was slow-going in the first half with the two teams getting up just two shots apiece and none on frame through the first 15 minutes of action.
Neither team could find the frame until Lynchburg drew a penalty corner in the 24th minute.
On a play that fooled nearly everyone in attendance, Winefordner both took and ultimately scored the penalty corner that would become the game winner.
Winefordner sent the corner into fellow defender Ryleigh Cameron who swung a pass to the left side into the stick of Marlou Wendriks.
Wendriks lined up a shot that became a pass and picked up an assist as Winefordner tapped it into the cage from the left corner of the goal to pick up her second career score.
The score was the lone difference-maker in a first half that saw the two teams combine for just seven shots with only one being put on goal.
The second half was dominated by the game's two goalkeepers who combined to stop 14 shots with none hitting the back of the cage.
The third period went without incident until the teams rattled off six penalty corners within the final four minutes of the quarter, with Lynchburg being awarded two after time had expired.
Freshman forward Anna Dorrestijn turned the slew of corners into a team-high three shots on goal but failed to push the margin any further before the break.
Lynchburg's 5-2 penalty corner advantage in the third was part of an 8-3 advantage on the day as they held the visitors to eight set pieces below their season average of 11.
In all, Brady stopped all six shots that came her way in the frame including several highlight-worthy plays to keep a blank sheet in Mary Washington's most prolific offensive quarter.
The sound defense continued into the fourth for Brady and company, as they held the Eagles to just two shots, both of which were saved by the senior in goal for Lynchburg.
Mary Washington outshot Lynchburg on the day by a final margin of 13-10 and committed just 11 fouls to Lynchburg's season-low 16 but the Hornets made the most of their opportunities to extend the program's streak to 25 games without suffering back-to-back losses.
Lynchburg (3-1) will stay on Shellenberger field for Game 3 of a four-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 16 when the Hornets play host to Kenyon at 1 p.m.
