Salem, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team defeated Roanoke 3-1 Saturday evening.
A pair of second-half goals from Josh Auger and Manzi Shalita propelled the hornets past the Maroons for their sixth-consecutive win.
Thomas Viscuso, Lynchburg's sophomore goalkeeper, was called on early to keep the Hornets in the game on the road. By the 14th minute, Viscuso had stopped three Maroon shots.
Chris Wiley scored on an assist from Luke Mega in the 16th to steal the early momentum from the home team. However, the Maroons countered right back with a score of their own late in the first half.
Lynchburg defense, with five shutouts on its ledger already, blanked the Maroons in the second half going as far as to keep Roanoke without a shot in the final 45 minutes.
The Hornets eventually broke through in the 67th minute thanks to Auger's second goal of the season. Benjamin Velasquez assisted on the game-winner. Velasquez leads the team with four assists.
Shalita doubled Lynchburg's lead with his second goal of the season in the 74th.
With the three scores, the Hornets increased their season average to three goals per game.
Lynchburg's seven wins in its opening eight matches marks its best start to a season since going 11-0-2 to start the 2018 campaign.
The Hornets (7-1, 2-0 ODAC) host Bridgewater on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
