Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's soccer junior Trevor Miller thrust Lynchburg past Bridgewater with a header in the 74th minute Wednesday night.
The Hornets entered the match on a six-match winning streak, and the Eagles entered play undefeated, but with four draws.
Lynchburg played most of the first half above the midfield line but were unable to break through for a lead despite outshooting the Eagles 8-2.
Benjamin Velasquez and Ayden Cass put two of those shots on target, but the Bridgewater keeper denied both.
The Eagles produced the most-dangerous opportunity of the first half, but Seth Dale, standing on the back post, was in the perfect spot to flick the header away.
In the second half, the Hornets kept up the pressure, but were still in a scoreless draw as the clock got thin.
With seven corners on the night, Lynchburg earned most of its shot attempts via headers, including five in the second half. Miller produced the fifth header finding the back of the net for the eventual game-winning score. Miller's second-career score was set up after Cesar Acosta sent in a corner kick. The Eagles got the first touch on it, but the clear attempt wound up at the feet of Chris Bovo who sent it back towards the box. Carter Averette redirected Bovo's bouncing pass to Miller who finished the job.
The Eagles countered with a heightened attack in the final five minutes, but their overzealousness resulted in three yellow cards and no goals.
Lynchburg delivered Bridgewater its first loss of the season and holds a lead in the conference standings as the only squad without a conference loss or draw.
Lynchburg (8-1, 3-0 ODAC) travels to Randolph-Macon for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 30.
