Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey squad is set for its Code Red competition when Roanoke makes its way to Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m.
The Hornets (9-2, 2-0) come into the matchup on a five-game winning streak, most recently taking down Centre in overtime, 3-2. Sophomore
Khanyisile Mzizi buried the game-clinching goal in the extra period to give Lynchburg the victory in its final nonconference contest of the season. The day before that, the Hornets shutout Randolph-Macon with a 2-0 triumph to stay undefeated in ODAC action.
In the series against the Maroons, the field hockey squad has won each of the last 25 outings. The last win was on October 18, 2023, when the Hornets came out on top, 3-1. Since 1981, Lynchburg boasts a 32-5 record versus Roanoke and a 15-3 record when hosting. The Maroons have dropped their last two games, both to ODAC opponents (Virignia Wesleyan and No. 15 Shenandoah).
Lynchburg currently sits at third in the ODAC in scoring average this season with 2.91 goals per game. Freshman
Jill Pleiter leads the way on the Hornets' attack with six goals in 11 games played, which ranks ninth in the conference. Five of Pleiter's goals served as game-winners, which is tied for the most in the ODAC. Her and fellow freshman
Maddie Schuchter are atop the squad in combined goals and assists with seven each, Pleiter with six goals and one assist and Schuchter with three goals and four assists.
Following the midweek match, the Hornets will take on Washington and Lee on Saturday, October 19 at 11 a.m. during Lynchburg's Homecoming weekend.
