Bridgewater, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored early and held off the Bridgewater Eagles for the entire contest to edge out a 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening at the Jopson Field Athletic Complex.
The Hornets (7-2-3, 5-1-1) have hit their stride on defense and continue to keep their opponents scoreless. Tonight's result marks the fifth consecutive game that Lynchburg has held the opposing squad without any goals. Things were clicking for the offensive side of the ball as well. The Hornets out-shot the Eagles by an 18-6 margin, including a 5-2 margin of goals on frame.
Just 5:22 into the action, junior
Reid Rouse sent a ball to fifth year
Zach Whelan, who buried it past the keeper to give Lynchburg the advantage. The Hornets fired off seven more shots in the first half while holding the Eagles to just two in that time frame. Lynchburg continued its command throughout the final 45 minutes, letting off 10 shots and allowing four from Bridgewater. The hosting Eagles created a pair of shot attempts in the final few minutes but neither converted.
Junior
Thomas Viscuso earned his seventh clean sheet of the year in 12 games played, which is tied for second-best in the ODAC this season. The Hornets lead the conference in goals allowed this season with six, two less than the next best team, Virginia Wesleyan.
Lynchburg returns to Shellenberger Field for the first time in over a week to square up against Washington and Lee on Saturday, October 2 at 2 p.m. during Lynchburg's Homecoming.
