Arlington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team fell in the first round of the Pablo Coto Tournament to Amherst, 76-51, on Saturday evening at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
The Hornets (1-2) had junior forward
Jayson Easton lead them in points with 11 while adding six rebounds anf two assists. Junior guard
Piercen Young trailed just behind Easton with nine points and tallied three assists, two boards and one block. Senior forward
Jonathan Foust led the team in rebounds with seven while contributing five points and one steal, block and assist.
There were three instances of the score being knotted in the beginning 10:53 of the contest: 6-6, 8-8, and 20-20. With the score tied at 20 apiece, the Mammoths controled the remainder of the half with a 19-4 run that gave them the lead for good and a 15-point advantage heading into the halftime intermission. Chris Hammond hit three 3-pointers for Amherst to close out the first half.
Although the Hornets cut their deficit to 10 following four points from Young and three from Foust, the Mammoths held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, extending it to 30 points with 3:31 to go. Amherst had five performers with double-figure scoring totals, led by Hammond with 22 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Will Schrerer also finished with a double double on a 13-point, 11-board stat line.
Lynchburg continues action in the Pablo Coto Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, November 24 at noon when the Hornets face Dickinson in the consolation game.
