Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team grabbed an early lead and stayed in front to earn a 66-55 victory versus Methodist on Tuesday night in Turner Gym.
The Hornets (3-2) add another tally to the win column after battling for their second consecutive win. Freshman forward
Jamarcus Brown impacted the game on both sides of the court with a team-leading 16 points on six-of-11 field goals. He added four rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist to his performance. Brown now has three outings this season with double-digit points and is second on the team in points per game with 13.0, shooting .636 percent from the field.
Junior guard
Piercen Young made his mark with 15 points, eight boards, two steals and one each of assists and blocks. Senior forward
Mason Makovec rounded out Lynchburg performers with double-digit scoring in the affair with 14 points, eight rebounds and one steal. Young paces the squad in scoring with an average of 14.4 points per contest.
After Methodist's Ke Edwards made the first basket of the night, the Hornets rallied off eight straight points thanks to four from Brown and two each from Young and Makovec. Lynchburg held onto the advantage for the remainder of the contest, extending its lead to as large as 14 in the first half. From the 7:18-mark until 3:41 left before halftime, the Hornets powered to a 12-2 run that put them ahead, 32-18. Makovec and redshirt freshman forward
Cole Callaway each contributed four points during the stretch.
The Lynchburg advantage held at nine-or-more points until the Monarchs produced nine unanswered points to cut their deficit to four, 56-52, with 5:33 to go. David McCallum Jr. sparked the run with a three-point play and Edwards finished it off with consecutive 3-pointers. From then on, the Hornets held Methodist to just three points for the rest of the affair and scored 10 of their own.
After the Thanksgiving break, the Hornets will hit the hardwood on Sunday, December 1 at 4:30 p.m. when Newport News Apprentice School visits Turner Gym.
