Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets got back on track with an 88-87 OT win over Nazareth to remain unblemished at home.
After Nazareth and Randolph got the Wayne Profit Classic started yesterday with an explosive 96-90 contest, the Golden Flyers returned to Turner for a date with the Hornets.
Nazareth grabbed an early 10-7 advantage over Lynchburg, but 11 unanswered points from the Hornets allowed them to storm in front. Lynchburg refused to give back the lead for the remainder of the game.
Lynchburg found their rhythm early with Jamarcus Brown and Piercen Young leading the charge offensively. However, after a quick eight points on four-of-four shooting from the field, Young left the contest due to an injury. From then on, Lynchburg showcased their best offensive committee performance of the season. Three Hornets finished with double-figures, Brown (17), Cole Calloway (13), and Michael Gray (15). Nonetheless, every player that touched the court for Lynchburg found the bottom of the net. The Hornets' bench players tallied 41 points compared to Nazareth's three.
The Golden Flyers trailed by 11, their largest deficit of the game, with six and a half minutes remaining, and began to mount a comeback. Jaylen Savage, Tyler Putney, and Merritt Holly all tallied 20+ points as Nazareth attempted to narrow its deficit. Trailing by three with 15 seconds left, Savage buried a three-pointer from the wing to send the game to overtime.
In the final five minutes of play, Lynchburg's rebounding on the offensive end helped them secure the victory. The Hornets finished with a season-high 51 rebounds,18 of which were on the offensive end. Brown, Eli Thomas, and Mason Makovec all recorded 10+ rebounds and combined for 35, one more than Nazareth's team total.
Lynchburg improves to 6-3 on the season and heads to Nashville for their next two games in the Music City Classic. There, they will face Mount Aloysius on December 29 and Marietta on the December 30 for their final non-conference games of the season.
