39-Point First Half Lifts Lynchburg Past EMU

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team scored 39 points in the first half and earned its third consecutive win against conference foe Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon in Turner Gymnasium.

The Hornets (4-4, 2-1) shot at a 51.7% clip in the first half on 15-of-29 from the field, allowing them to claim a 20-point lead by the halftime intermission. Junior guard Brooke Cason led the way for Lynchburg's offense with 12 points in the first half on four-of-six from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Audra Petty was close behind with 11 points in the first 30 minutes. Cason finished the affair with a season-best 15 points, tying sophomore guard Kate Littlejohn for the team-lead in points overall.

Cason scored the first points of the game on a long range shot off a dish from senior guard Olivia Harris. Lynchburg grabbed the advantage right away and held on for the entirety of the contest. With a five point edge at the 8:54-mark in the second quarter, Petty drained a 3-pointer that sparked a run of 12 straight points for the Hornets.

Littlejohn, who had four points during that stretch, capped off the run with a layup with 4:21 left in the first half and pushed Lynchburg's lead to 17 points, 28-11. Petty scored six consecutive points in the final 1:25 of the period and increased the Hornets' advantage to 20 to end the half.

Although the Royals attempted a comeback effort in the final 30 minutes, holding Lynchburg to just five points in the third quarter, the effort fell short as the Hornets held onto a double-digit lead for the remainder of the outing. EMU scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome its deficit.

Lynchburg will not return to the home court until the flip of the calender year. Next up on the slate is an exhibition against Emory & Henry on Tuesday, December 17 at 11 a.m.
