Women's basketball splashes 15 3s

Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team made 15 3-pointers in its penultimate regular-season game and beat Averett 90-58 Wednesday evening.

Sayre Brandstatter and Sammi Sever both led the way with four makes from deep and 20 points each. Brandstatter scored 20 points for the first time since Dec. 9, and Sever dropped 20 for the third time this season and second in the month of February.

Olivia Harris also made four 3-pointers totaling a season-high 19 points. Harris is averaging 8.8 points a game coming off the bench in her junior year.

Lynchburg made 11 of its 15 3s in the first half as the Hornets built a 56-26 lead. Lynchburg's first 3 out of the halftime break came from Brandstatter and put the Hornets up by 32. The Hornets hovered around that margin for the remainder of the game until midway through the fourth quarter. Once again, it was Brandstatter on the fastbreak after her fourth steal of the game, and her layup gave the Hornets their biggest lead with 38 points.

Kacey Kelly led the way with six rebounds and also contributed six points of her own. Bree Spainhour recorded Lynchburg's only block, but the Hornets held Averett to 56 points. The Cougars only made one 3-pointer in the game as well.

Lynchburg's 15 3s were the second-most in a game in program history. The Hornets made 16 3s against Wilson for the program record on Dec. 29.

The Hornets have one more game on the schedule as they host Va. Wesleyan at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. With a win, the Hornets (13-11, 8-9 ODAC) should be in line to host a first round playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
