Salem, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team fell to Shenandoah 55-42 Friday night in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
Sammi Sever led Lynchburg in scoring with 13 points, Sayre Brandstatter added nine, and Kacey Kelly recorded five points with a game-high 14 rebounds.Â
Brooke Cason put Lynchburg on the board with an early 3-pointer. The first quarter showed three ties and four lead changes. Both teams entered the second quarter tied at 11.
Despite trailing by 16 with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter, a 14-3 Lynchburg run led by Brandstatter and Sever cut the Shenandoah lead to five.Â
Despite staying within striking distance early in the fourth, Shenandoah's Terese Greene scored a couple of baskets and knocked down a couple of free throws to extend the lead. Bree Spainhour fouled out of the contest with 4:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. Afterwards, Shenandoah finished the game on a 10-6 run, ending Lynchburg's season.
Lynchburg nearly doubled its win total from a season ago and returned to the Salem Civic Center after a one-year hiatus in 2022-23. Sever led the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game, Spainhour's 48.3% shooting from the field not only led Lynchburg but was also good for fifth in the ODAC. Brandstatter's 3.7 assists per game were the second best in the conference. Brandstatter earned all-conference honors ensuring the Hornets posted an All-ODAC performer for the 13th straight year.
