Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball comes up short at home

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team had a look at the game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation but came up short and fell to Ferrum 67-64 on Wednesday night.

Celebrating National Girls and Womens in Sports Day, most of the women's teams from Lynchburg's athletic department were in attendance for the game. The Panthers and Hornets provided an entertaining tilt from the jump. Sammi Sever scored 11 points in the opening quarter, and the two teams went into the first-quarter break tied 20-20.

Both teams went cold for the second quarter combining for only four makes including one 3 apiece. Sever made the lone shot from deep for the Hornets in the second and finished with a team-high 20 points when it was all said and done.

In the second half, fans were treated with free t-shirts after every 3 the Hornets made, but the event staff quickly ran out of shirts after Brooke Cason sank three shots from downtown early in the second half and put Lynchburg up 13.

Ferrum shot 50% from the floor in the fourth quarter and went 7-8 from the free-throw line to fuel a big comeback. Taryn Blankenship tied the game up at 62-62 with less than three minutes to play in the game. She finished with 17 points, and Kayla Cabiness, who finished with a game-high 22 points, iced the game for the Panthers with clutch free throws down the stretch.

Macey Mullins had a look from 3 just in front of Lynchburg's bench, but Ferrum closed out intensely to disrupt Mullins' potential game-winner.

The Hornets (12-10, 7-8 ODAC) go on the road as they look to improve upon their seventh-place positioning in the conference standings before the season wraps up on Saturday, Feb. 17. Lynchburg travels to Greensboro, N.C. for a matchup with the third-place Quakers on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
