Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team swept Greensboro for the first time since 2018 on Tuesday afternoon and improved to 8-0 for the first time in six seasons.
Lynchburg entered Tuesday's double-header facing a five-game losing streak against the Pride, but Kailey Dorcsis and Sarah Watts teamed up to power Lynchburg past the Pride and snap the skid to the tune of a 1-0 victory.
Dorcsis improved to 4-0 on the season twirling her third-career shutout and seventh-career complete game while striking out six.
Both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning when the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week Sarah Watts broke the tie with her third home run of the season. It was also her third solo shot of the season and third straight game with a double.
Dorcsis allowed her fifth hit of the game in the seventh inning with two down but got the final out on a ground ball to Watts.
In Game 2, Emily Charlton was pitted against her sister Katherine Charlton and earned her third win of the season in the circle as she out-dueled her younger sibling.
Emily Charlton kept the Pride scoreless in their first four trips to the plate. However, with Lynchburg leading 1-0 in the fifth after an RBI groundout from Madison Barnes, Charlton gave up three runs and the lead to the Pride.
The Hornets retook the lead in the next half inning scoring four runs on two hits including an RBI pinch-hit double from Jessica Strickland.
With Charlton in line for the win, Dorcsis came back out to work the top of the sixth and retired the side with two flyouts and a strikeout. She earned the save since she pitched with Lynchburg only up by two, but the Hornets ended up winning by eight thanks to RBI doubles from Watts and Alyssa Talayumpetwa and RBI singles from Bri Hodges and Georgia Thompson. Thompson's two-RBI single enforced the run rule and improved Lynchburg's record to 8-0 for the first time since 2018.
The Hornets (8-0) take on No. 2 Salisbury in Maryland for a double-header scheduled for Thursday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m.
