No. 15 baseball splits home ODAC double-header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team split a home double-header with Roanoke on Saturday, winning Game 1 8-6 and falling in Game 2 21-8.

The Maroons struck first in the first two innings of Game 1. Roanoke scored once per inning in its first two trips to the plate slashing four hits against Wesley Arrington. However, Arrington settled in and shut out the Maroons over his next five innings of work. He pitched into the eighth inning before being lifted for Mason McDowell with runners on first and second. When he left the game, Lynchburg was leading 8-3.

The Hornets scored eight straight runs beginning with an RBI double from Riley O'Donovan in the fourth. After Eric Hiett drove in two runs in the fifth, O'Donovan tallied two more RBI with his second double. Quinn Madden and Gavin Collins scored in the seventh to give the Hornets some insurance. Madden was 3-5 in Game 1 including an RBI double in the eighth inning to put Lynchburg back up by two after the Maroons scored four in the top of the inning.

Colin McGuire worked two innings of relief work allowing only one hit and earning the first save of his career.

In Game 2, the Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from Madden and Benton Jones. The Hornets led 6-2 headed into the fifth, but Roanoke hung 11 runs on the Hornets in the inning essentially ensuring a split of the double-header at the midway point of Game 2.

Roanoke scored eight more runs in the final four innings compared to two from Lynchburg securing a 21-8 victory on Fox Field.

The Hornets (11-6, 2-2 ODAC) are ranked 15th in the d3baseball.com poll and take on Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va.
