Lynchburg, Va. — The University of Lynchburg softball team swept Washington College 7-0, and 9-1 (six innings) to improve to 4-0 on the young season.
Kailey Dorcsis picked up her second win of the season after pitching six innings and only conceding three hits in Game 1. She also added nine strikeouts. Logan Curtis closed the game for Dorcsis and the Hornets. In Game 2, Emily Charlton picked up her first win of the season as she gave up only four hits and one run in five innings of work. Amala Clawson finished the game to secure the sweep. In total, the pitching staff only gave up one run in 13 innings of play.
After a two-week break following the opening weekend, the Hornets got off to a quick start in Game 1. After Dorcsis fanned the first three batters in the top of the first, Alyssa Talayumptewa got the scoring started with a line drive down the left field line. The ball got all the way to the wall in foul territory allowing Talayumptewa to touch them all as she earned an inside-the-park home run. From there, the Hornets extended their lead in the fourth inning courtesy of Jessica Strickland's first-career home run. Lynchburg then added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings each, shutting out the Shorewomen 7-0.
In Game 2, the Hornets got off to another scorching start, plating three in the bottom of the first and second innings, respectively. After Washington College responded with a single run in the top of the third, the Hornets answered by plating a run in the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to enact the run-rule victory. Talayumptewa went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, and Haley Martin finished her day 3-for-3 with four runs scored.
The Hornets started the season 4-0 for the second year in a row and will have an opportunity to continue their success when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Grand Slam Triangle Tournament beginning Friday, March 9.
