Madden homers twice in No. 21 baseball's road win

Box Score

Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team won another high-scoring affair on Wednesday taking down Virginia Wesleyan 19-10 on the road.

Quinn Madden homered twice, Brandon Garcia went 3-4 with two doubles, two walks, four runs, and three RBI, and Colin McGuire earned the second win of his career in a relief appearance lasting 2.2 innings.

The Hornets scored in seven of the nine innings beginning with a two-run first. O'Kelly McWilliams IV doubled in Garcia, and Joe Munitz recorded an RBI single to score McWilliams.

By the fifth inning, the Hornets had 10 runs and led 10-4. In the top of that inning, Garcia hit an RBI double and later stole home.

However, the Marlins tied the game up with a six-run bottom of the fifth knocking Mason McDowell out of the game. McDowell had entered in the third to relieve the starter Josh Gjormand but couldn't get through the fifth inning despite getting two outs in the frame and striking out four in his two innings of work.

McGuire settled down the Marlins bats after giving up one unearned run. McGuire's 2.2 innings of work kickstarted a shutout of the Marlins the rest of the way. Austin Riney and Nathaniel Mack also pitched in the closing innings for the Hornets.

Madden hit his second homer of the day in the seventh as the Hornets scored four in the inning and four more in the eighth. Madden has five home runs in his last six games. Sean Pokorak also homered in the ninth inning to round out the scoring for Lynchburg.

The Hornets (12-6, 3-2 ODAC) are ranked 21st in the d3baseball.com poll and host Washington and Lee in a double-header on Saturday, March 23 beginning at noon.
