Lynchburg, Va -- Lynchburg women's lacrosse suffered its first consecutive defeat of the season, falling 19-10 to Shenandoah on Wednesday.
Shenandoah was first on the scoreboard and quickly followed up with a second five minutes into the quarter. It wasn't long before Lynchburg found success on the attack as Neely Morris cut into the lead mere moments later. Shenandoah began dominating the draw controls (7-1) and possession, taking a firmer hold on the game with another two goals. Determined to keep Shenandoah within reach, Lynchburg cut into the lead again as Sydney Dumas found the net to equal her full-season goal tally from 2023. Shenandoah was keen to regain a dominant lead even with only two minutes left in the first period and pressed to regain its two-goal advantage. The traveling Hornets found the net twice, headed into the break with a 6-2 lead.
Shenandoah started the second quarter with the same attacking poise as the first and found two quick goals to maintain momentum. Lynchburg cut the lead several times throughout the quarter but failed to find consistent defensive answers for Shenandoah's probing attacks. Each of Lynchburg's three goals was met with a quick response by Shenandoah as it stretched its lead to seven. Despite the increasing lead, Lynchburg managed only one shot less than Shenandoah, gaining more success in the draw controls leading to more attacking chances.
Shenandoah dominated the early exchanges of the second half and scored three more goals before Lynchburg would respond. Sydney Dumas found the back of the net but Lynchburg was met with another offensive response by Shenandoah. The rest of the third quarter offered prolonged periods of even play before Neely Morris completed her hat trick to give the Hornets their seventh. Shenandoah went into the last period leading 16-7.
Both teams split six goals evenly in the final quarter. Mya Hausauer opened the scoring for Lynchburg while Neely Morris found her fourth goal of the game minutes later. Morris recorded her fifth game of the season with three goals or more. In the game's final minutes, Reagan Bradley converted her free position opportunity to close out the game as Shenandoah saw out the 19-10 victory.Â
This game marks Lynchburg's first consecutive loss of the season. Lynchburg (9-6, 5-2 ODAC) remains just behind Shenandoah (10-3, 5-2 ODAC) in the conference standings, at fourth place.
The Hornets travel to number one Washington and Lee for their next game on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
