Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team extended its win streak to four with a 14-6 victory over Hampden-Sydney Saturday afternoon.
The win streak is the longest this season and the victory also marks the eighth-straight for the 16th-ranked Hornets in the all-time series against the Tigers. Lynchburg has outscored its opponents 70-27 on the run.
Despite giving up the first goal of the game to Hampden-Sydney's Ford Burke with 12:35 remaining in the first quarter, Lynchburg scored the next seven goals of the contest to open up a 7-1 advantage with 9:49 left in the first half.
Spencer Vandenberg scored four-straight points in a game time span of 7:11 during the run. The sophomore attacker scored three-straight goals of his own before assisting on a tally from Jake Rust.Â
Vandenberg finished with a career-high six points on a season-high four goals and two assists. He led a group of four multi-goal scorers for Lynchburg in the game.
The Tigers claimed the final two goals of the half to draw within four at 7-3 at the break. The second half opened with a four-goal run from Lynchburg to put the game out of reach.
This time it was Riley Hastings who carried the load offensively, scoring three points on two goals and an assist in a span of 5:16. Hastings secured his second five-point outing of the year off three goals and a pair of helpers.Â
The 2023 all-conference selection leads the Hornets in points (48) and assists (24) on the season and has already surpassed his goal total from last season with two regular season games remaining.
The Tigers and Hornets tallied three apiece across the final 21:37 of the game to hold the Lynchburg advantage at eight and bring the score to its final 14-6. Lynchburg has held Hampden-Sydney under 10 goals in each of the last three meetings and five of the last six.
The Hornet defense held top Tigers scorer Ray O'Brien to two goals on eight shots and authored their eighth performance of the season holding opponents under 10 goals. Lynchburg is 8-0 in those games.
Steve Ulrichs was active on the defensive end scooping up four ground balls and forcing a career-high three caused turnovers as part of a Lynchburg effort that forced 13 in total.
Michael Kraus took all 24 faceoffs for Lynchburg and posted one of the best days of his career, fending off three different Tiger opponents at the X to the tune of a 17-24 (70.8%) performance, his second-best mark of the season. The senior also collected a team-high six ground balls.
Lynchburg (10-5, 7-1 ODAC) will return home for its final two regular season games of the season, first taking on Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. for faculty appreciation night. The pair of Hornet foes sit third and fourth in the ODAC standings.
