Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team defeated Shenandoah 15-11 on Wednesday night.
Jake Rust and Riley Hastings both recorded hat tricks as the Hornets jumped out to a 14-1 lead by halftime with seven goals each quarter. Rust tallied his sixth hat trick of the year, and Hastings secured his fifth three-goal game and second in a row. Rust leads the team with 37 goals, and Hastings leads the team with 51 points.
10 different goal scorers in total found the back of the net during Lynchburg's dominant first half, and Tyler Hadley made three saves on four shots in his 27 minutes of action before halftime. Lynchburg also benefited from 13 turnovers from Shenandoah in the first half. Shenandoah coughed it up 19 times on the night with nine of them caused by a Lynchburg player.
In the second half, Brodie Mason was the only Lynchburg scorer to find the back of the net as Shenandoah went on a three-goal run to open the third quarter and a seven-goal run to finish out the game. Mason's fifth goal of the season was the only interruption of the Shenandoah scoring streaks.
Lynchburg held on for the victory, however, with a trio of goalies, Andrew Willer, Chase Wesley, and Eric Allen, combining for five saves in net. Lynchburg also won seven faceoffs in the second half.
Lynchburg (11-5, 8-1 ODAC) concluded conference play with the win on Wednesday and takes on St. Mary's (Md.) in a nonconference tilt Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. to celebrate Senior Day. The Hornets look to have the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament locked up and will receive a bye all the way into the semifinals. They'll host that semifinal game on Thursday, May 2.
