Softball sweeps Averett on Senior Day

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team swept Averett 7-1 and 2-1 on Saturday during Senior Day.

Prior to Game 1, the Hornets celebrated the senior careers of Lexi Powell, Amala Clawson, Bre Carter, and Bri Hodges

The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings on the Cougars beginning with an RBI double from Sarah Watts. The reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week went 4-4 in Game 1 with two doubles and two RBI. Alyssa Talayumptewa scored Watts on a groundout, then Hodges ripped a hard single to right to drive in Madison Barnes

The Hornets tacked on two more runs in the fourth and the sixth all while Kailey Dorcsis was dealing in the circle. She pitched six innings, struck out seven, and only allowed four hits and an unearned run. In the top of the fifth, Dorcsis fanned her sixth batter of the game marking her 100th strikeout of the season.

Carter relieved Dorcsis in the seventh and closed the game, registering a strikeout of her own.

The Hornets got another sterling pitching performance in Game 2, but the only blemish on Emily Charlton's final line came in the first inning. She allowed on run in the first, then settled in, struck out eight, and faced the minimum in three different innings.

It seemed that first-inning run was all Averett needed as Lynchburg stranded seven runners in the first five innings including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

Lynchburg broke through in the sixth on a base hit from Kaleigh Hackett scoring Jessica Strickland, who pinch hit earlier in the inning. In the seventh, the Hornets worked the bases loaded, and Talayumptewa drove in Carly Hudnall, the game-winning run, on a groundout to second.

Lynchburg's (27-9, 15-5 ODAC) double-header Sunday with No. 8 Christopher Newport has been postponed due to weather in the forecast. A make-up date is TBD.
