Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team split its regular-season conference finale with Guilford winning the first game 12-2 but falling 10-5 in Game 2.
The Hornets put up five runs in the first inning to begin its 10-run victory in Game 1. All five runs were unearned as the Quakers made two errors in the first inning. However, Joe Munitz and O'Kelly McWilliams IV combined for three RBI in the inning.
As Wesley Arrington pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, Lynchburg added on six more in the sixth. Quinn Madden hit a three-run homer, Gavin Collins went deep as well, and Logan Webster scored Munitz with a single. Madden completed his 3-6 day with another RBI and a single in the ninth before Mason McDowell closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth.
The Hornets had another big sixth inning during Game 2, but instead of adding to a lead, Lynchburg's four-run sixth tied the game up 5-5. All four of those runs came off the bat of Sean Pokorak, but his grand slam marked the final runs of the game for the Hornets. Guilford scored in all three of the next three half innings and won 10-5.
Lynchburg finished the regular season 25-14 with 13 conference wins and is in fifth place in the conference standings tied with Bridgewater. The Hornets will wait for the announcement of the 2024 Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament bracket to see who and where they will begin their title defense. The Hornets will play Christopher Newport in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m.
