Softball two wins away from advancing in ODAC Tournament

Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team fell to Virginia Wesleyan 6-0 Saturday but bounced back with a 4-1 victory over Bridgewater to stay alive in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.

The Hornets will need to win two games against the No. 11 Marlins on Sunday, May 5 to advance to the championship series next weekend. Lynchburg would be eliminated after just one loss tomorrow.

Against the Marlins to start the day, the Hornets put up five hits, and their best opportunity came with two runners on in the sixth after Madison Barnes singled and Sarah Watts doubled with one out. However, Kaleigh Hackett grounded out, and Hailey Martin came in to pinch hit but was retired on a comebacker. Emily Charlton, Kailey Dorcsis, and Amala Clawson all pitched in the loss.

Lynchburg, looking to stave off elimination, fired up Dorcsis in the circle again for another matchup with Bridgewater. She delivered for the second time this weekend, pitching seven innings, only allowing one run on five hits, and struck out a batter.

Lynchburg only sent 10 batters up to the plate in the first three innings but got things rolling in the fourth. Barnes led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Hackett. After Bridgewater responded in the fifth, Lynchburg blew the game open in the sixth. Carly Hudnall led off with a double to kick off a four-hit, three-run inning. Watts, Hackett, and Martin registered RBI in the inning to all but secured the win.
