Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team is ready to take on the Mary Washington Eagles on Wednesday, September 11 at 6 p.m. for their third match of the 2024 campaign.
The two squads have matched up numerous times before, totaling 27 games in total. Between the two teams over the past 12 years, the results have been even in which both teams have won five games and lost five games against each other. The No. 13 Hornets most recently went to battle against the Stockton Ospreys, which concluded in a 4-1 Lynchburg victory. Goal scorers from the game included Danielle Coon (2), Jill Pleiter, and Anna Dorrestijn. Goaltender Shay Schoones faced 5 shots on goal, allowing one but nonetheless had an outstanding performance.
Against Mary Washington, keep an eye on Anna Dorrestijn as she has averaged 6 shots per game and has been able to put the ball in the back of the net. Along with Dorrestijn, another player to watch is Danielle Coon, as she is top 3 in scoring in the ODAC in the young season. The Hornets are 2-0 in the early stages of the season, looking to advance to 3-0 after Wednesday.
In Mary Washington's early season, the Eagles have a solid 3-0 start including two wins against ODAC foes Bridgewater College and Roanoke College. Eagles goalies Tori Winans and Erin Roy have been tough to beat this season as they have faced 12 shots on goal combined, only allowing two goals. Forward Grayson Scott has been a threat to opposing teams in the brief season, scoring 4 goals on 14 shots which already ties her total goals from the 2023 campaign.
The Hornets will have a quick turnaround after their matchup with the Eagles on Wednesday, as they will head to Collegeville, Pa. to take on the Ursinus Bears on Saturday, September 14th at 1 p.m.
