Lynchburg, Va. -- Three first-half strikes lifted the Lynchburg men's soccer team to victory against William Peace in the squad's 2024 debut on Shellenberger Field on Thursday night.
The Hornets (1-1-2) came out of the gates in a sprint, scoring their first two goals in the before the five minute mark. Just 1:58 into the affair, a Lynchburg throw in found midfielder
Zach Whelan's head in the box. Whelan bumped the rock towards the goal and the ball was redirected off a defender's leg into the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later, forward
Evan Pask delivered a ball to midfielder
Chris Wiley on the run, which Wiley finished with pace to put the Hornets up two 3:35 into the outing. In the 28th minute, forward
Sean DeLorenzo scored his first career goal off a dish from Whelan, which was the final notch on the scoreboard in the competition.
Lynchburg created numerous offensive opportunities in the game, firing off 15 total shots and five on frame. The three total goals were the most scored by the Hornets in the young 2024 season.
The Hornets earned their second shutout of the season tonight. Goalkeeper
Thomas Viscuso started the game and earned the win, stopping both shots on goal that came his way.
Alex Derstine made an appearance as the netminder, subbing in the 73rd minute.Â
The men's soccer team now has a brief nine-day break in the schedule before its next competition, when they host Catholic on Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the Lynchburg Hornets Sports Network YouTube channel and have live stats available to view.
