Lynchburg, Va. -- In a defensive battle, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer squad saw sophomore
Chris Wiley fire the ball into the back of the net in the final 10 minutes of action, which allowed the Hornets to secure a 1-0 victory over Catholic on Shellenberger Field Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (2-1-2) got off to a quick start, firing numerous shots in the early goings but unable to hit the cage. After a few attacking opportunities for Lynchburg, the sides started to settle into what would be a test of strength for both back-lines. In the 81st minute, captain
Benjamin Velasquez took ownership of a throw in at the top of the Catholic box. Velasquez heaved the rock towards the goal and found Wiley in the box. Wiley got a head on the ball and nodded it at a defender. Off the rebound, Wiley struck it clean and got it past the keeper for his first goal of the season.
Performers on both sides played with aggression all match, making it difficult for either team to have successful attacking chances. The Cardinals let off just three shots in the contest and the Hornets struck towards the goal eight times. Each keeper accrued one save in the affair,
Thomas Viscuso took to the net for the Hornets and James Pickeral was the netminder for the Cardinals.Â
Lynchburg grabbed its second win in as many contests and now gets ready for ODAC action. Next up on the slate for men's soccer is a home outing versus Roanoke, the first conference opponent the Hornets will square up against this season. Lynchburg welcomes the Maroons to Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live and have live stats available.Â
