No. 10 Field Hockey Outlasts No. 18 Ursinus in Shootout

Box Score Collegeville, Pa. -- In a top-25 showdown, the University of Lynchburg field hockey squad came out on top in an offensive battle that amounted nine total goals between the sides. Although the No. 18 Bears scored three goals in a comeback attempt, the No. 10 Hornets held off them off and secured a 5-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Lynchburg (4-0) keeps their unblemished season-record and gets revenge after losing to Ursinus last season. The four consecutive wins is the most for the Hornets since starting the season 6-0 in 2020. Forward Maddie Schuchter paced the offense for Lynchburg with a hat-trick in the affair, the first of her career.

Midfielder Khanyisile Mzizi got the team off and rolling early with a solo goal just 5:04 into the contest. 2:43 later, midfielder Allie Freeman found Schuchter on a goal that put the Hornets ahead by two, a lead they would keep for the remainder of the first period. After the first frame, Ursinus notched its first goal from forward Marie Brainard 1:36 into the second quarter. The Hornets followed up with two more goals before the halftime intermission. Schuchter was involved in both, one goal and one assist to goal-scorer Sydney Rowe, a forward. Lynchburg owned a 4-1 advantage heading into the break.

Schuchter buried her third and final goal of the matchup less than a minute into the third period. Defender Saar Prins and forward Anna Dorrestijn helped to build to the goal and were both credited with assists on the play. The Bears did not go down without a fight, scoring three more times to claw their way back into contention. The Hornets held a one-goal lead with 11 minutes to go and successfully fended off the Ursinus attack to earn a hard-fought victory.

The field hockey squad is right back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, for another top-25 bout. The Hornets are set to face No. 22 Bryn Mawr at 1 p.m. in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The game will be streamed live and have live stats available to view.
