Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team returns to the field after almost two weeks away from competition for a heavyweight bout against No. 8 York on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m in York, Pa. Following that, the Hornets will take on Susquehanna in Selinsgrove, Pa. on Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m.
The No. 11 Hornets (4-1) are ready for an exciting return to action this weekend. Their matchup against York comes with baggage, as last season the Hornets took down the Spartans twice, once with a 2-0 triumph in the regular season and again with a 1-0 victory in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Overall, the Hornets have gotten the better of the Spartans and own a 9-6 record against them since 2002. York will surely be looking for redemption, but the Hornets are coming in well rested and ready to earn their fifth win of the season. As a squad, Lynchburg ranks third in the ODAC in goals per game (3.00) and scoring margin (1.20).
York owns a 6-2 record this season, with its most impressive win coming against No. 3 Johns Hopkins in a 3-2 double-overtime contest. Last time out, the Spartans fell to No. 6 Christopher Newport, 2-1. Defender Libby Wild ranks second in the nation with six defensive saves this season. Goalkeeper Belle Fields is 17th in Division III in both save percentage (.841) and goals against average (.850). Offensively, midfielder Riley Buschert paces the Spartans with five goals and two assists in eight games.
Susquehanna comes into the weekend on a three-game winning streak, most recently taking down King's College in a lopsided 5-1 finish. Offensive production has been spread out this season for the River Hawks as 12 different performers have scored and four have multiple goals. Sunday's contest will mark the first meeting between these two programs on the field.
Following this weekend, the Hornets return home to kick off ODAC play. Lynchburg is set to welcome Bridgewater on Wednesday, October 2 at 4:30 p.m.
