Buena Vista, Va. - The Lynchburg women's volleyball team got back on track tonight, cruising to a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia on the road.
The Hornets were able to take control of the match early on, jumping out to a 17-10 advantage in the first set. Lynchburg carried this momentum through the first frame, clinching a 25-21 win.
However, the Knights went into the second set with a much more aggressive style of play, led by senior outside hitters Sydney Bassett and Brenna Clyde.
Three attacking errors and three service errors early on in the second frame provided Southern Virginia with a spark of momentum. Later on in the set, the Knights would claim their first win of the night after a 7-3 run, 25-17
Tied at one set a piece, both squads looked to control the lead. The Hornet serving played a major role during this set, claiming four points through aces.
An 8-1 run towards the middle of the frame was ultimately the deciding factor. Lynchburg would go on to win the third set by the widest margin of the night, 25-16.
During the fourth frame, Lynchburg seemed to be headed down a similar path as in the second. Bassett and Clyde found their rhythm once again, and the Hornets began to struggle with errors momentarily.
Down 17-12 in the fourth, Lynchburg shifted gears. A 7-0 run would catapult the Hornets back out in front, and allowed them to grit out a 25-21 victory.
Lynchburg now sits at 4-1 overall, with two more games on the road this weekend facing Mary Washington and Gettysburg this Saturday, Sept. 7, in Fredericksburg, Va.
