Lynchburg's Late Comeback Effort Cut Short At Shenandoah

Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team came within one point of Shenandoah in the final minute of action but ultimately fell short, 50-48, on Saturday afternoon in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

The Hornets (6-8, 3-4) trailed by eight with 7:27 left to go in the contest. Consecutive jumpers from sophomore forward Taylor Brown cut Lynchburg's deficit to four, 45-41, with 6:29 remaining. After Shenandoah's Terese Greene hit one from the field, freshman guard Audra Petty laid one in and sophomore guard Kate Littlejohn followed up with bucket in the paint to come within two of lead. Maddie Kimble pushed one through for SU, but Lynchburg answered as junior guard Brooke Cason cashed one from beyond the arc with 38 seconds on the clock, bringing the score to 49-48 in favor of Shenandoah.

Junior forward Bree Spainhour blocked a shot from Greene that allowed Lynchburg to an opportunity to take the lead. Out of a timeout, Littlejohn tried to find Spainhour in the paint on a tough, long pass, but could not connect and turned it over. After Kimble made one-of-two from the foul line, Lynchburg had a few second on the clock to attempt a shot to tie or snag the win. Littlejohn had a chance for the shot but it was well contested by the Shenandoah defense and did not fall through.

Petty and Littlejohn led Lynchburg offensively with 12 points apiece. Petty added eight rebounds and two steals while Littlejohn tallied two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Cason created four caused turnovers with two blocks and two steals while contributing eight points. Spainhour tied a career-best with three blocked shots.

Shenandoah's Greene, the top scorer in the ODAC this season, produced her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shawnise Campbell totaled 16 points and grabbed eight boards.

Next up on the slate for the Hornets is a bout at conference rival Randolph on Wednesday, January 22 at 5 p.m.
