Ashland, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Randolph-Macon on Saturday to halt the Hornets' five-game unbeaten streak.
Randolph-Macon owned an 11-10 shot advantage, despite conceding eight corner kicks to Lynchburg. The Yellow Jackets netted both their goals within a six-minute span in the second half and held the Hornets to just two shots in the remaining 25 minutes.
Lynchburg opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Makayla Hargrove collected her fifth goal of the season. Yellow Jackets keeper Erin Morris received a pass and struggled to earn possession on the goal line; Lauren Orner retrieved the ball and fired a pass to Hargrove in the box, who muscled forward for the score.
The Hornets collected the lion's share of opportunities in the first half, tallying seven shots to Randolph Macon's three. Though Lynchburg corralled three corner kicks and several set pieces in the first 45 minutes, the scoreline remained 1-0 heading into the halftime break.
After trading blows to begin the second half, Randolph-Macon's Ariel Farmer found the equalizer in the 60th minute. The forward cut outside with the ball to earn the edge on Lynchburg's Sammie Rogstad, and from outside the 18-yard box, fired a low-rolling shot that trickled beyond Kate Shepherd's reach.
Lynchburg failed to stop the bleeding minutes later when Ally Spangler delivered the presumptive game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Alexa Stohr heaved a looping shot from 25 yards out that clipped the crossbar, and Spangler converted the rebound into the Yellow Jackets' second goal.
The Hornets failed to advance into their attacking third in the final minutes, and the referee's whistle signaled Lynchburg's second loss of the season.
With two upcoming home matches, Lynchburg boasts an 8-2-2 record and a 3-1-1 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets fell to fourth in the ODAC standings following Saturday's loss.
The women's soccer team returns to Shellenberger Field on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6:00 p.m. when Lynchburg hosts Shenandoah for its 2025 Code Red match.
