Hornets Thwart WildCats at Home

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team finished conference play in the regular season with a 76-57 victory over the WildCats on Tuesday night in Turner Gymnasium.

The Hornets (9-14, 6-10) scored 20 points in each of the first three quarters and 16 in the final 10 minutes. Lynchburg snagged the lead right away following the first whistle and held onto it for the entirety of the contest. The key to victory was success from beyond the arc as the Hornets cashed 16-of-29 (.552 percent) 3-point attempts and held Randolph to five-of-29 (.172 percent) from 3-point range.

Sophomore guard Kate Littlejohn paced Lynchburg offensively with a career-high 18 points. She drained five-of-eight (.625 percent) from long range and dished out five assists. Junior guard Brooke Cason added 15 points and also made five 3-pointers. Junior forward Bree Spainhour produced her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Olivia Harris tallied 12 points and climbed into the top 10 all-time in program history for points in a career.

In the final three minutes of the second quarter, the Hornets scored nine straight thanks to four from Spainhour and five from Harris to take a 14-point advantage with 1:25 left in the first half. Down 14 points, Randolph's Imani Hardin made a layup in the dying seconds of the third quarter to spark a run of nine consecutive points.

The WildCats clawed back to within five with 6:11 left in the fourth quarter before freshman guard Audra Petty snapped the streak with a bucket from downtown. From then on, Randolph was held to just two points for the remainder of the affair.

The Hornets are set to close out the regular season with a nonconference matchup against Mary Washington, which will also serve as the squad's senior day. Lynchburg will take on the Eagles on Saturday, February 22 at 1 p.m.
