Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg baseball team (3-0) travels to Greensboro, N.C. this weekend, Feb. 22-24, for three contests at the D3 Showcase Tournament. The Hornets will face Cortland (0-0) on Saturday, Marietta (0-0) on Sunday, and Denison (0-0) on Monday.
No. 15 Cortland will begin its 2025 campaign this weekend after its first three games were canceled. The Red Dragons will play their first contest of the weekend against Marietta on Friday afternoon. Cortland is coming off a 31-14-1 finish last season that included its 31st straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance. This year's squad returns five All-Region selections from a season ago, including All-American pitcher Luis Misla.
Last year, when these two squads faced off, Cortland defeated Lynchburg 5-4 in 10 innings.
Next up on the docket, the Hornets face the Marietta Pioneers. Marietta will also begin their season in Greensboro against Cortland on Friday followed by Christopher Newport on Saturday. The Pioneers enter this season after a 24-19 finish in 2024. This year's group enters the season with the second most votes outside of the national rankings.
When the Pioneers took on Lynchburg in 2024, the Hornets won 5-4 in 10 innings.
No. 5 Dennison begins their season with matchups against Christopher Newport and Cortland before facing the Hornets. Denison had a spectacular season in 2024, winning 42 of their 50 games and making it to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Big Red enter this year with two Preseason All-Americans, First Team outfielder Eric Colaco and Third Team pitcher Will Rettig.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Lynchburg and Dennison.
Following this set of games, the Hornets will have one more road contest, at Mary Washington on Feb. 26, before playing their home opener on Mar. 1.
