Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg softball team grabbed two more wins at home, taking down Mary Washington 8-0 in both games of the doubleheader.
In the first game of the afternoon, Anna Grace Terrel got the party started for the Hornets in the third inning with a base hit that brought
Sarah Watts and
Kaleigh Hackett home.
Later on in the fourth inning, Watts drove in a run with a double to center field to add to the Lynchburg total. Hackett then returned the favor for Watts, bringing her across home plate with a base knock.
The Hornets then closed out the contest in an explosive fifth frame. With the bases loaded, Watts cleared the bases off a tipple to put Lynchburg in front 7-0. Watts tallied one walk and three hits in the first game, two triples and one double. Moments later,
Jessica Strickland sealed the contest with a single to bring Watts home for the run rule.
Emily Charlton threw all five innings for Lynchburg and finished with four strikeouts while allowing three hits and no walks.
In the second game of the afternoon, Lynchburg's barrels stayed hot after the intermission. In the opening inning, an
Alyssa Talayumptewa singled to left center brought
Lexi Powell and Hackett in for an early 2-0 lead. Later on in the inning,
Zoe Elliott tripled to right center, allowing Talayumptewa and Watts to score.
In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Sarah Watts sent the first ball of the year past the outfield wall for a two-run homer. In the fifth, a
Kalli Monahan double drove in
Addison Walter. A sixth-inning
Layla Lietzan single brought in Strickland to score the final run of the afternoon.
Kailey Dorcsis earned the win for the second game with five strikeouts, two walks, and one hit during her four innings of work.
Logan Curtis checked in for the final six outs, claiming two strikeouts as well.
The Hornets' next game up will be a doubleheader at home this Sunday, March 2, against Greensboro.
