Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team squared off against Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday evening and was nipped, 3-1, for its first conference loss of the season.
The No. 3 Hornets (15-3, 4-1) struck first in the top of the first inning when
Brandon Garcia launched a solo home run down the right-field line, giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead after the first at bat. Hampden-Sydney (10-9, 4-3) responded in the bottom half of the frame to even the score. After a lead-off error, Matthew Arnold singled through the right side, scoring Jack Wilson from second, and knotted the score at 1-1.
From there, both pitching staffs locked things down, with neither team managing to break through until the seventh inning. After
Logan Tapman walked the first batter and stuck out the second batter in the bottom of the seventh,
Colin McGuire took his spot on the mound to close out the contest. Jaxon Masterson was able to single to center, driving in Christian Chambers to make it 2-1.
The final blow came in the eighth inning when Grayson Harris singled up the middle, scoring Wilson to extend the Hampden-Sydney advantage to 3-1. Following a walk from
Jacob Wright in the top of the ninth, the next two batters fouled out and the final batter flied out to conclude the outing.
The Hornets had their three-game winning streak snapped while the Tigers extended their consecutive run of victories to six. Next up for Lynchburg will be a weekend double header against Guilford at Fox Field on Saturday, March 22, starting at noon.
