Lynchburg, Va. -- Nine straight goals out of the opening whistle and seven consecutive goals to end the contest allowed the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team to surge past Hampden-Sydney with a 19-3 triumph on Wednesday night at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 14 Hornets (4-4, 2-0) got a commanding victory for the squad's Code Red game in which hundreds of fans and student packed the stadium, creating an electrifying atmosphere. With less than a minute off the clock,
Liam Holman netted the first goal of the affair to spark a run of nine straight.
By the end of the first quarter, Holman,
Jake Rust, and
Riley Hastings bagged two goals apiece and
Parker Sealey added one to give Lynchburg a seven goal advantage after 15 minutes. After a scoring drought of nearly 10 minutes, Rust tallied a solo goal with 5:25 left before halftime.
Grant Voigt capped off the nine goal rally by finishing a feed from Holman.
The Tigers got their first goal of the outing with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter from Broder Conley. Prior to that, the Hornets held HSC scoreless for a 28:44-span.
Cole Zacharias answered back quickly just 13 seconds later and the squads went into the halftime intermission with Lynchburg ahead, 10-1.
The two sides traded goals out of the break before the Hornets strung together seven goals to close out the matchup. Sealey and Voigt netted one apiece while Campion White and Kavin Wood scored back-to-back for the Tigers. The last goal that HSC scored was with 4:33 remaining in the third period. It was all Lynchburg the rest of the way.Â
The Rubley brothers,
Mark Rubley and
Will Rubley each tallied goals before the end of the third quarter. In the final 15 minute stretch,
Mark Rubley added one more goal while
Will Rubley dished out an assist. Rust,
Charlie Evans,
Van Tanguay and
Carter Besz were the other scoring contributors in the final period.Â
The Hornets were dominant at the faceoff X, winning 18-of-24 draws.
Riley Frankel had a day, winning .800 percent (16-20) of his faceoff attempts. He added six ground balls and one assist to his stellar performance.Â
The offensive unit exploded for 19 goals, the fourth occasion this season that Lynchburg scored 15-or-more in a competition. Rust (4g, 1a) and Holman (2g, 3a) led the way with five points apiece while
Riley Hastings tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action this Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m., heading back up to Maryland to take on St. Mary's.
