Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg stormed to another commanding victory over Shenandoah, 20-3, on Wednesday night at Shentel Stadium.
The No. 14/13 Hornets (9-5, 6-1) produced their second consecutive 20-or-more goal game in tonight's offensive showcase. Sophomore middie
Liam Holman led the way with a game-high five points on a hat trick and two assists. Fifth year midfielder
Jake Rust tallied a game-best four goals for his 10th outing this season with three-or-more scores. Junior attack
Spencer Vandenberg produced a hat trick in tonight's affair as well.
Lynchburg started the contest hot, scoring the first two goals in the beginning 2:21 of the game. After a Shenandoah score from Dylan Foughty, the visiting Hornets rattled off five straight goals. Two of those were from Vandenberg, including the goal to cap the stretch with 14:04 to go in the second quarter. The hosting Hornets scored twice before the halftime intermission while not allowing a goal from Lynchburg and the squads went into the break with UofL ahead, 7-3.
It was all Lynchburg the rest of the way. The visiting Hornets scored 13 consecutive goals in the second half and held Shenandoah scoreless throughout the half. Holman and junior attackman
Riley Hastings netted quick back-to-back goals to start the second half - just six seconds apart from each other - which pushed Lynchburg's advantage to 9-3 just 40 seconds into the third quarter. Rust tallied three in the second half while all eight of the remaining goals were scored by different Hornet performers.
Although the offense was spectacular, the defense was incredibly stout. Tonight's result marks the seventh time this season that Lynchburg has held opponents to single-digit goals and the fifth occasion that opponents scored five-or-fewer in a matchup. Netminder
Andrew Miller contributed heavily to that with 10 stops for a .769 save percentage. Faceoff specialist
Riley Frankel was efficient at the X, winning 13-of-19 (.684 percent) faceoff attempts.
Lynchburg sets its sights on Easter Weekend, where the team will travel to Bridgewater, Va. to square off against the Bridgewater Eagles on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
