Bridgewater, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team rallied to a third consecutive victory by double-digits at Bridgewater, 19-6, on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 14/13 Hornets (10-5, 7-1) netted the first six goals of the affair all in the first quarter. Junior attackman
Finn Schmidt was the main producer during this stretch with two goals while junior attack
Riley Hastings dished out two dimes. With a run that spanned from the 14:12-mark until 6:10 left in the opening period, Lynchburg owned a 6-0 advantage. The Eagles (5-12, 3-7) netted the final goal of the first quarter and the Hornets controlled a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes.Â
To open the second quarter, fifth year middie
Jake Rust bagged his second goal of the game to spark a seven-goal run that lasted nearly the entire remainder of the opening half. Six different Hornet performers tallied goals during the stretch, with sophomore midfielder
Kolbe Haug converting two to lead the way. Freshman attackman
Will Rubley capped the run with 1:48 to go before halftime and the squads went into the intermission with Lynchburg ahead, 13-1.Â
Issac Beals of Bridgewater netted the first two goals out of the break to cut the Eagles' deficit to 10 with 10:03 to go in the third quarter. The Hornets responded nearly five minutes later with back-to-back goals from senior attack duo
Carter Besz and
Charlie Evans. Each of their goals were scored just 18 seconds apart.
Bridgewater got one back to start the fourth quarter, but Lynchburg responded with three straight scores to push ahead, 18-4. The Eagles sandwiched two goals between one from sophomore middie
Cole Oprandi and the contest finished with a 13-goal triumph for the Hornets.
Lynchburg made a difference on the ground, at the X, and on the clear. The Hornets grabbed 48 ground balls to the Eagles' 23 and won 19-28 attempts on the faceoff. Junior faceoff specialist
Riley Frankel was a significant contributor to that, winning nine-of-12 at the X and scooping a team-high seven ground balls. Lynchburg also cleared the rock at a 84% clip (21-25) while Bridgewater went 14-23 (60.9%) on clear attempts.
Next up on the slate for the Hornets is their final home contest of the regular season against Randolph on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
